PWM and MPPT controllers connect solar panels to a battery in different ways. Choose from the actual panel and battery specifications: check the controller's permitted PV voltage and current, cold-weather open-circuit voltage, and battery charging profile before wiring an RV array.
The controller must match both sides of the system: the solar array and the battery. Begin with their labels and the controller manual, then compare PWM and MPPT using the voltage and current limits that apply to your setup.
Side by side
| PWM | MPPT | |
|---|---|---|
| How it regulates | Switches the panel-to-battery connection during charging | Tracks the array’s operating point and converts its input for battery charging |
| Panel and battery voltage | Panel operating voltage is pulled toward battery voltage during charging | Panel and battery voltages can differ within the controller’s input and conversion limits |
| Check before choosing | Confirm the panel and battery arrangement is permitted by the controller maker | Confirm array voltage, current, battery profile and the controller’s limits |
Victron describes these operating differences in its controller guide. Performance depends on the array, battery, conditions and the specific controller; a type label alone does not predict the energy a particular RV will receive.
Check the array limits
Read the panel data for open-circuit voltage and current, and calculate the array values for the planned series or parallel wiring. Compare them with the controller’s maximum PV voltage and current. Account for the maker’s instructions for cold-weather voltage, which can differ from a panel’s nominal operating voltage.
Match the battery and system
Select a supported battery chemistry and charging profile. Follow the controller instructions for fusing, conductor size, wiring order, grounding and temperature sensing where applicable. For the wider system plan, see RV solar sizing and lithium vs AGM RV batteries.
When replacing a controller
Record the existing panel wiring, controller model and battery settings before selecting a replacement. A controller with different input limits may require changing how the array is wired. If the manual does not cover your configuration, have a qualified RV electrical technician review it.

Common questions
What is the difference between PWM and MPPT solar controllers?
A PWM controller switches the panel connection to regulate battery charging. An MPPT controller tracks the array's operating point and converts its input to the battery's charging voltage within the controller's limits.
Can an RV solar panel have a higher voltage than the battery?
That depends on the controller. Check its permitted PV input range and maximum voltage against the array's cold-weather open-circuit voltage.
How do I choose an RV solar charge controller?
Match the controller to the array's maximum voltage and current, the battery chemistry and charging profile, and the manufacturer's installation limits.
Can I replace a PWM controller with MPPT?
Possibly, but first check the new controller's panel input limits, battery settings, wiring and installation requirements against the existing system.
