A voltmeter reports battery voltage, while a shunt monitor measures current through a shunt and uses configured battery data to estimate state of charge and time remaining. Choose a shunt monitor when you need current-based tracking of an off-grid bank; a voltage display is a simpler check, but it does not count energy flowing in and out.
A voltage display and a shunt monitor answer different questions. A voltmeter shows electrical potential at the terminals; a shunt adds current measurement so a compatible monitor can track power moving into and out of the battery bank.
Side by side
| Voltage-only display | Shunt battery monitor | |
|---|---|---|
| Measures | Battery voltage at its sensing point | Current through the shunt and battery voltage |
| Reports | A voltage reading | Calculated values such as state of charge, amp-hours used and time remaining, depending on model |
| Setup | Connect the display as its manual specifies | Install the shunt and route the required battery and system connections through it |
| Best fit | A basic electrical check | Tracking a regularly used off-grid battery bank |
State-of-charge figures from a monitor are calculations based on measured current, voltage, battery capacity and configured thresholds. Set up the monitor for the battery type and capacity, and follow its manual.
Keep all current in the measurement path
For a shunt to account for charging and loads, follow the wiring diagram for the exact monitor and make sure the required negative circuits pass through the shunt. A connection that bypasses it can be omitted from the monitor’s current accounting. Do not copy a wiring diagram from a different battery or monitor model.
Choose for the way you use the bank
A voltage-only display can suit a simple system where a reading is enough. A shunt monitor can be more useful when you need to follow energy use and charging over time. See lithium vs AGM RV batteries for battery capacity context, and RV solar sizing for the charging system.

Common questions
What does an RV battery shunt monitor do?
It measures current through the shunt and combines readings with configured battery data to calculate values such as state of charge and time remaining.
Is a battery shunt better than a voltmeter?
A shunt monitor provides current-based tracking and calculated battery information. A voltmeter is simpler and reports voltage, so choose based on how much information you need from the system.
Does a shunt monitor measure battery capacity?
It estimates state of charge from measurements and settings; it does not change the battery's rated capacity. Correct configuration and current routing matter to the estimate.
Where does an RV battery monitor shunt go?
Follow the exact monitor manual. Victron's SmartShunt manual requires the battery negative and system negative connections to be arranged through the shunt so current is measured.
