Choose a campervan layout around how many people sleep in the van, whether the bed stays made, how you cook and the gear you carry. A fixed bed avoids a daily conversion but occupies floor space; a convertible bed frees daytime area but has to be reset. Map doors, aisles, appliances, water and power before locking in cabinets or a build system.
Start the layout with people, sleep and daily routines; cabinets and appliances should fit around those decisions.
Compare common layout choices
| Layout choice | Sleeping setup | Daytime space | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed rear bed | Bed stays made | Under-bed space can hold gear, depending on build | Permanent sleeping area uses floor area |
| Convertible bench or dinette | Seating converts for sleep | More open floor space when converted back | Daily bedding and surface changes |
| Modular bed and storage | Components can be repositioned in compatible systems | Layout can adapt between trips or uses | Fitment and mounting are system-specific |
| Open cargo-first layout | Portable or removable sleeping gear | More room for bulky equipment | Less built-in furniture and kitchen storage |
These are planning patterns, not standard floorplans. Van body, wheelbase, roof height, window positions and the occupants’ needs determine what fits.
Place the bed, galley and storage
Mark the driver’s cab, side and rear doors, wheel arches and windows on a top-down sketch. Add the bed in both sleep and travel modes, then draw the clear route from the cab to the rear doors. A galley needs working room and access to its water, fridge and power connections. Storage should be reachable without blocking the bed, door or equipment you use most.
For a modular example, Adventure Wagon describes an interior system designed to add or reposition beds, storage, kitchens and accessories for compatible van platforms. Other systems use fixed cabinetry; compare the actual vehicle fit and installation instructions before choosing one.
Reserve room for appliances and power
Measure each fridge, fan, heater, water tank and electrical component using its installation guide, including the space needed for ventilation, wiring and service access. A 12-volt fridge affects both the cabinet plan and the daily energy estimate; see 12V compressor vs absorption fridges. For portable power needs, use the RV power station sizing guide or start with RV and van solar sizing.

Common questions
What is a good campervan layout for two people?
A fixed bed can suit a pair who want a ready sleeping area, while a convertible setup preserves more daytime floor space. Measure the actual van and decide how much cargo space and galley access you need.
Is a fixed bed or convertible bed better in a van?
A fixed bed stays ready but takes up more permanent floor area. A convertible bed opens the living space during the day and needs to be set up again for sleep.
Can a campervan have a toilet and a kitchen?
Some floorplans include both, but the fit depends on van dimensions, aisle clearance, storage and the equipment selected. Mock up doors and walkways before installing cabinets.
Are modular campervan interiors worth it?
A modular system can let you reposition or add beds, storage and galley components, while a fixed build can be simpler when your needs are settled. Check vehicle fit and installation requirements for each system.
